Chocolatey Cereal Squares

Mmmm...those crispy rice cereal treats. We've all eaten them. They've been lovingly made by our moms, dads, grands or neighbors just to make us happy. So irresistible!

The first crispy rice cereal to hit grocery stores was Kellogg's Rice Krispies back in 1928. That's over 90 years ago. Almost as long as Steen's has been making cane syrup.

The treats we know best as "Krispie Treats" have also been around for generations. The well-known recipe uses marshmallows to form the delicious confection.

Have you ever thought of making a rice cereal treat with syrup? One of our Steen's staffers recently made them with our signature syrup and peanut butter, and they turned out great. We took his creation one step further, jazzing them up in our test kitchen by using chocolate crispy rice cereal and adding semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Oh, yummm. You've just gotta try them!

Steen’s Chocolate Cereal Squares

1 (15 oz) box chocolate crisp rice cereal

(we used Kellogg's Cocoa Krispies)

2 cups Steen's Cane Syrup 1 cup crunchy peanut butter

1 Tbsp unsalted butter ½ tsp vanilla extract ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Pour cereal into a large bowl and set aside. Using a candy thermometer in a 2 quart saucepan, heat syrup over medium heat. When syrup reaches 270° F (soft crack stage), remove syrup from heat. Stir in peanut butter, butter and vanilla into syrup, blending well. Pour syrup mixture over cereal. Sprinkle in chocolate chips. Working quickly, stir mixture with rubber spatula. Transfer mixture to an 8”x 13” baking pan lightly coated with cooking spray. Press mixture firmly into dish. Allow the pressed mixture to cool completely, then cut into squares. Yields 15-18 pieces.
